15 Ideas to Help Stop Drinking Alcohol
A great many people want to stop drinking alcohol but don't know how. That may sound trite to you, however; to a person with a drinking problem or who has alcoholism - it isn't at all. Wanting to stop drinking and not feeling there is any way to give it up haunts many people.
Alcohol Abuse can and often is a life or death situation so please - do not take this lightly! If someone you care about is reaching out for help to stop slugging down the booze - Get it for them!
- Seek out self-help groups. There are millions of 12 step groups, churchs and other programs to assist you in quitting drinking alcohol. Rehab may be a good idea.
- Don't go in to places like a bar where you may be tempted to drink.
- Don’t hang around people who drink or who may tempt you to drink. Theses people might be your current *friends* or even family. It isn't easy.
- Have a friend or family member check all your cabinets and cupboards; closets and garage, etc... locate and destroy every single bottle of alcohol that you find. If you have a spouse or roommate who drinks alcohol, explain what you are doing and ask them if they would not keep alcohol around the home and to drink while out.
- Let the world know that you want to stop drinking! Seek the support and encouragement from the people in your life who CARE about you!
- Many people begin drinking alcohol to drown their problems or pain. Some people find their alcoholism has been going on their whole lives. Finding a good CD therapist can be of great value.
- Start positive and interesting hobbies to keep you busy.
- Excercise! Often simply a quick walk is all it takes to take the edge off of wanting a drink of alcohol.
- Make lists & set realistic goals for yourself. Check your list regularly for progress.
- Reward yourself when you don't consume alcohol. For each day, week, month or year that passes and you don't drink - celebrate! Think of all the money you have saved! You deserve a gift! Buy yourself something nice and/or go out with your loved one or a friend and have a blast!!
- Keep giving yourself incentives to stay alcohol free. The benefits will be obvious in how you look and feel but by setting up other goals and achieving them - your attitude gets more positive all the time.
- Meditation is a very powerful way to implant in your mind that you are dedicated toward this goal one day at a time; one hour at a time (whatever it takes!) Make quiet time to meditate morning and night.
- Talk with other people who have the same goal as you do - to stay sober from alcohol! Nothing much seems to work so well as being able to talk with someone else who completely understands what you are going through.
- Eat healthy foods to replentish the many lost vitamins and minerals alcohol has stolen from your body. (Please check with your doctor!)
- Give yourself a break! Every day you stay away from alcohol is a sussess indeed! Celebrate your life by being happy! You are only as happy as you decide to be!
Remember that to stop drinking alcohol might be the most difficult thing you or your loved one has ever done.
