The Hubpages Challenge
61publishing 100 Hubs in 30 Days
The HUB gave the Challenge!
I happen to believe this was an Enormous mistake and one *they* might just regret unless they don't mind 1000's of very sub-standar Hubs. But you would HAVE to believe that Someone high-up made this call.
Hmmmmmm. For them to say - "fun experiment that will show them what their real earning potential is here on HubPages." well, frankly that rather SADDENS me.
IS THIS THE POINT OF HUBPAGES?? To have people pump out as much as possible as fast as possible - quality will Obviously suffer.
---> fun experiment that will show them <meaning US> what their real earning potential is here on HubPages.
I have always written hubs under the asumption they should be of the best possible quality I was capable of producng. In order to do this it takes: Time, Research and Creativity. TIME.
I Have also seem MANY 2 paragraph Hubs with rankings in the high 90's which I simply will never understand! I have asked others why and no one seems to understand.
I have Yet to get a 90 and I feel I have written at least a Few killer hubs....;{
HUB FORUM QUOTE "Basically there are a ton of Hubbers (and nearly 800 Hubs!) who have accepted the challenge of publishing 30 Hubs or 100 Hubs in 30 Days as a fun experiment that will show them what their real earning potential is here on HubPages.
It's been a lot of fun and it's great to see a lot of Hubbers who have left HubPages actually come back now that we're all getting crazy and publishing Hubs like they're going out of style. If you think that you're up for the challenge, you can check out all of the action over here in our forums."

As a statement to this - I'm not even PUTTING any ads on this hub! OH - yes, except for the ones that are just REQUIRED and show up anyway....
sigh....

It was a very interesting concept but I don't think it worked out well. I think they meant well.
I agree with private eye2500 they are studying ....
How hubber reacts to Challenges
If no of hubs in a Month increases then Ranking of site is improved ?
they are testing all these in hubpages
It was a good experiment-- people participate for different reasons.
I "sort-of" participated-- knowing I would not reach a goal of 30 in 30, but I did boost my average.
I hoped to boost my personal total of hubs to 100, and it helped me.
Different things help to motivate people with different goals.
I don't think it took away from other functions of the HubPages site.
I think most of those who did go 'full-on' into the challenge did try to ensure they were making quality articles. There were a lot of very good ones.
I did not want to participate, because is difficult to keep good quality. It was too many Hubs around to read them, and Hubbers who participated did not have time to support other colleagues...
From my point of view, it was too much pressure, altough I am very glad if some of my colleagues achieved their goals.
After this challenge, I do not see some colleagues any more, and I am very sorry because of that.
This idea was good for some Hubbers, but not for whole community.
For me, those 30 hubs are the only ones that bring in the pennies - and while they are a paltry sum, it feels good. The rest of the hubs are purely for pleasure - I write whatever I feel like. Any site has to survive and they can only do that when the bottom line is good. People don't realise that if there's no moolah coming in, they wouldn't have a site to have fun on! Or do they think HP is a charitable organisation??
I was fairly new here when I read about this challenge. I considered it for a day as a way to participate more fully in the community but decided against it. I spend about 12 hours on each article I write, counting research and all, and I couldn't see how I could participate in 30—certainly not 100—in 30 days without speed writing. And that's not what I came in here to do. I want to get better at my craft not start short-cutting.
The first thing I noticed was that my readership dropped, even from my regulars. Some Hubbers told me they were too busy writing 3 Hubs a day to read anybody else's material. But I thought that was supposed to be part of the experience. Then I started getting 50 or 60 email notices a day and as you note, the quality was getting worse and worse.
I think its a great idia, a chalenge for me is always fun and i like challenging myself, I am starting it soon!
I've only been here a couple weeks and can see why it was a ridiculous idea. I've read hub after hub that publishes no information of any kind, just simply bumbles around the title with filler words and obvious points, and then ends. I don't spend nearly as much time reading the hubs of others as I had planned because you have to sift through so much tripe, present company excluded, of course. It will only hurt the reputation of Hubpages in the long run.
Yeah, sadly I think it hurt the community. Looking at the forums and even just the hubs being published today, there is a big change from before the challenge. I think it altered the make-up of the community and drove out many really good writers who were more interested in the community aspect of HubPages.
On the good side, it taught me not to rely too much on any one site, and to focus on promoting my own site instead. I am learning much from doing that, and it has turned out to be a lot of fun to learn WordPress.
Thanks for the link! :)

The challenge really turned me off to Hubpages for a while there.
