This is a very important topic and a question that is asked every second of every day.
The plain truth is however; there is no such animal as the "can't fail"Any business is only as good as the people who run it business. and by that I mean everyone - from managment right down the ladder to the person who cleans the toilets (if you have toilets).
The skill set of the management team needs to be weighed carefully. Consider; do you have a true expert management team in your chosen field or at least ONE (perhaps yourself) with access to other experts and are willing to take advantage of them? If not, you need to rethink everything.
Regardless of the type of business start up and the capital cost start up requirements there are several other fundamental steps necessary in the start up process which will determine the level of success or failure of any business.
Doing a market research based feasibility study and having a matching business plan are a *must do* start. {GOSP}=Get Out Some Paper--NOW! Use your hand and a pen.
Without these two things in the beginning of ANY project, you are literally running around in the dark ramming into things until you fall down.
Properly managing a start-up entity over the initial first 2 1/2 years is critical! Solid decision making is indespensible especially in the financial planning area. These start up concepts are crucial in the process of success. One must also be willing to work long long hard hours, weekends, holidays--work, work, work is BASIC during this period of time. If you are not willing (or the person you hire is not willing) to do this and do it *happily* - just stop now.
There are many factors to consider. No one can predict the future economic conditions here in the West (or anywhere for that matter) with any degree of certainty in these times we live. The business model that is able to respond seemlessly to economic & environmental changes are the ones most likely to sustain themselves in adverse conditions and largely profit from favorable ones.
Whatever it is you chose to do, research, capital, expertise, and management are key in determining whether a business wil be successful or not. There are no guarantees and I imagine you all know that already. While there obviously isn't any guaranteed "can't fail" businesses; there are some which are virtually assured of being successful if properly managed.
Think of businesses where the demand will never go away. People have to eat. People have to have a place to live. People need clothing to wear. Babies will always be born. People will always die. Think Mortuaries and Daycare Centers and like related industries.
So long as people die, there will be a steady stream of business for mortuaries. You may not get rich but these types of businesses are assured a steady stream of customers plain and simply true.
I also know from experience that in order for your business to be successful, it has to be something you can remain PASSIONATE about for a very long time. If you lose interest, you lose your drive. You are running the ship - you lose steam and so does your crew.
After doing some long-hour reading, here are some of the ideas/concepts which I found to be recommended by people in strategic planning services, business consultants, business planners and professional business developers. Some of them are a bit off the wall (IMO) but hay! - it's what they are talking about in terms of what is the best types of start ups these days - you also HAVE to keep in mind EVERTHING I said above no matter what you decide to do.
Here are the top 10 Business start-up Concepts I Found:

--Now, I am NOT saying I agree completely with this list. I would add to the list INFORMATION and SECURITY.

Unfortunately, prostitution is illegal in many countries so brothel is a non-starter.
Good advice, better to get the truth up front like this than to kid ourselves that we have the secret knack and will succeed anyway.
I have been in business all my life and have often been fortunate, but never without organization enthusiasm and a plan.

My vote goes to affiliate programs. Zero cost to join.
Wow, cannot believe that was a suggestion. Daycare is always in demand. I think anything in finance would work too, especially in this economy.
Affiliates are always a risky business financially or time wise.......Choose carefully. By the way, great hub!
